Backend Developer
Interview Guide

Backend developer interviews focus on API design, database architecture, system design, and coding. Expect questions on RESTful API principles, database modeling and query optimization, caching strategies, and asynchronous processing. Strong backend engineers understand performance, reliability, and security at a systems level.

How would you optimize a slow database query?

3.

What is the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases?

4.

How do you implement authentication and authorization in an API?

5.

Explain the CAP theorem with a real-world example

Expert tips for Backend Developer interviews

1

API design fundamentals are tested at all levels: HTTP methods, status codes, versioning, pagination, filtering, and rate limiting.

2

Database knowledge across SQL and NoSQL is important: know when to use relational vs. document vs. key-value vs. time-series stores.

3

Caching is a core backend skill: Redis patterns (cache-aside, write-through, write-behind), TTL strategies, cache invalidation.

4

Understand idempotency in API design — it's critical for payment APIs, retry logic, and distributed systems.

Backend Developer Interview FAQ

Python, Java, and Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript) are the most commonly used. Go is growing rapidly, particularly for microservices and high-performance systems. Ruby (Ruby on Rails) remains common in startups. For interviews, most companies allow your preferred language — choose what you're most fluent in rather than trying to use the company's preferred language.

Very important for most modern backend roles. Know microservices patterns: service discovery, API gateways, service mesh (Istio), circuit breakers, distributed tracing, and event-driven communication. At smaller companies, monolith-to-microservices migration experience is particularly valuable. For system design interviews, design for microservices but acknowledge monolith starting points.

Indexing strategy (B-tree, composite indexes, covering indexes, partial indexes), query execution plan analysis (EXPLAIN), N+1 query detection and prevention, connection pooling, read replicas for read scaling, and partitioning/sharding for write scaling. Also know when to denormalize for read performance and when to use materialized views.

Eventual consistency is a consistency model where, given enough time without updates, all replicas will converge to the same value. It's used in distributed systems to prioritize availability over immediate consistency (as per CAP theorem). Use cases: social media likes/views (approximate counts are acceptable), distributed caches, DNS resolution, and shopping cart availability. Don't use it for: financial transactions, inventory management, or any system requiring strong consistency guarantees.
