Business Analyst Interview FAQ

BAs typically focus on requirements documentation, process analysis, and bridging business and IT — often in project-based work. PMs own product strategy, roadmap, and long-term product vision. In practice, roles overlap significantly: in tech companies, BAs often work more like junior PMs; in consulting and enterprise, BAs are more documentation and process-focused.

SQL is increasingly expected for BA roles, particularly in tech, analytics, and data-heavy industries. Basic SQL (SELECT, WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY) is table stakes for many roles. Advanced SQL skills set you apart for higher-paying positions. Data-focused BA roles at companies like Amazon, Google, or Capital One require strong SQL.

BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) is a standard notation for modeling business processes. It's commonly expected in enterprise BA roles (banking, insurance, large corporations). For tech company BA roles, process mapping knowledge is valued but BPMN-specific notation is less critical. Know the concepts even if not every symbol.

The CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) from IIBA is the gold standard for senior BAs. The PMI-PBA (Professional in Business Analysis) is recognized in project-focused environments. Entry-level: the ECBA from IIBA. For Agile environments, certifications like CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner) or SAFe certifications are highly valued.
