Data Engineer
Interview Guide

Data engineering interviews test your ability to design, build, and maintain data pipelines, warehouses, and infrastructure. Expect a combination of SQL proficiency, programming skills, distributed systems knowledge, and data modeling design.

Common Data Engineer Interview Questions

1.

Design a real-time data pipeline for clickstream events

2.

Write a SQL query to find the top 5 customers by revenue per month

3.

How would you handle late-arriving data in a streaming pipeline?

4.

Design a data warehouse schema for an e-commerce business

5.

What is the difference between a data lake, data warehouse, and data lakehouse?

6.

How do you handle schema evolution in a production pipeline?

7.

Explain the CAP theorem and its implications for data systems

Expert tips for Data Engineer interviews

1

Practice complex SQL daily: window functions, CTEs, recursive queries, and performance optimization.

2

Understand the full data stack: ingestion (Kafka, Fivetran), transformation (dbt, Spark), storage (Snowflake, BigQuery, Delta Lake), and orchestration (Airflow, Prefect).

3

Data modeling is a key differentiator: know star schema, data vault, and OBT (One Big Table) trade-offs.

4

For pipeline design questions, always address reliability, scalability, data quality, and observability.

Data Engineer Interview FAQ

Window functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, LAG/LEAD, SUM OVER), CTEs (WITH clauses), subquery optimization, JOIN types and performance, aggregate functions, and query execution plans. Most interviews include at least one complex multi-step SQL problem.

Python is significantly more common in modern data engineering roles. PySpark (Python API for Spark) is the dominant interface. Scala is more important for Spark core contributions, high-performance stream processing, and roles at companies with Scala-first engineering cultures.

Very important. Most modern data engineering roles work on cloud platforms. Know at least one cloud deeply (AWS Redshift/Glue/S3, GCP BigQuery/Dataflow, Azure Synapse). Managed services (Databricks, Snowflake) that run across clouds are also critical to understand.

Batch pipelines process data in scheduled chunks (hourly, daily) — good for large volumes, complex transformations, and acceptable latency. Streaming pipelines process data continuously with low latency (seconds to milliseconds) — essential for real-time analytics, fraud detection, and event-driven systems. Modern systems often use Lambda or Kappa architectures to handle both.
