Machine Learning Engineer
Interview Guide

ML engineering interviews test both software engineering depth and machine learning systems knowledge. Unlike data science roles, ML engineers focus on production: building ML pipelines, deploying models at scale, and maintaining ML infrastructure in high-throughput environments.

Expert tips for Machine Learning Engineer interviews

1

ML system design is the most differentiating interview for senior ML engineers — practice designing recommendation systems, fraud detection, ranking systems, and search.

2

Know the full ML lifecycle: data collection, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.

3

Production ML differs from research: focus on latency, throughput, model freshness, and observability.

4

Be able to implement core algorithms from scratch: gradient descent, backpropagation, attention mechanism, decision trees.

Machine Learning Engineer Interview FAQ

ML system design asks you to design end-to-end ML systems: data collection, feature engineering, model selection, training infrastructure, evaluation, serving, and monitoring. Common examples: recommendation systems, ad ranking, fraud detection, search ranking, and content moderation. Practice by designing 5–7 systems from scratch, covering each component.

PyTorch is the dominant framework at most research-oriented companies (Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, academic teams). TensorFlow/Keras is more common at Google and enterprise settings. For production serving, know TorchServe, TensorFlow Serving, or NVIDIA Triton. For orchestration, MLflow and Kubeflow are widely used.

Math depth varies by company. Research-focused roles (OpenAI, DeepMind, Google Brain) expect linear algebra, calculus, and probability at a deep level. Product ML roles (recommendation systems, ads, search) test practical ML knowledge and system design more than mathematical derivations.

Offline evaluation uses historical data and metrics like AUC, precision/recall, RMSE, and NDCG to estimate model quality before deployment. Online evaluation uses A/B tests or bandits to measure real-world impact on business metrics (CTR, conversion, engagement) after deployment. Both are needed; offline metrics often don't translate directly to business impact.
