Expert tips for Product Designer interviews

1

For live design challenges, spend the first 3–5 minutes asking clarifying questions — rushing to sketch is a red flag.

2

Connect every design decision to a user need or business goal — aesthetic choices alone don't win design interviews.

3

Show systems thinking: how your design works across dark/light mode, different screen sizes, edge cases, and loading states.

4

At top tech companies, they expect you to critique their own products honestly — be specific and constructive, not sycophantic.

Product Designer Interview FAQ

In modern tech companies, the terms are often used interchangeably. However, 'product designer' typically implies ownership of the full design process from research through final visual execution, with close collaboration with PM and engineering. 'UX designer' sometimes emphasizes the research and experience layer over visual craft. At companies like Meta and Google, 'product designer' is the standard title.

You're given a design prompt (e.g., 'Design a feature for elderly users to stay connected with family') and 30–45 minutes to sketch a solution on paper or whiteboard. Interviewers evaluate your process: how you define the user, scope the problem, ideate broadly, make trade-off decisions, and communicate your rationale. The quality of the final sketch matters far less than the quality of your thinking.

Figma fluency is essentially required at all top tech companies. You should be comfortable with: auto-layout, components and variants, interactive prototyping, design tokens, and collaboration features. Some interviews include a Figma exercise. Having a polished portfolio in Figma with well-structured component libraries is a strong differentiator.

Projects that show end-to-end ownership of complex, real-world problems. Interviewers at FAANG are most impressed by: 1) Work that shows measurable impact (conversion, engagement, accessibility), 2) Design thinking applied to genuinely difficult problems (not just 'make it prettier'), 3) Evidence of cross-functional collaboration and influence, and 4) Systems-level thinking (design systems, component architecture).
