Palantir
Interview Prep
Palantir has one of the most distinctive interview processes in tech. They look for 'deployment strategists' — people who can work directly with clients, handle complex and ambiguous situations, and drive impact in high-stakes environments. The interview tests both technical depth and client-facing communication.

Common Palantir Interview Questions
Tell me about a time you had to understand a completely new domain deeply to solve a hard technical problem.
Palantir's Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) regularly parachute into new industries — healthcare, defense, finance, energy — and need to develop genuine domain expertise quickly. Describe the domain gap, how you approached learning it (who you talked to, what you read, how you validated your understanding), and how fast you were able to contribute meaningfully.
Describe the most ambiguous or ill-defined problem you've ever been handed. How did you turn it into something solvable?
Palantir clients come with messy, ill-defined problems ('our analysts spend too much time on data preparation') rather than clear engineering requirements. Walk through how you scoped the problem: what questions you asked to move from vague problem statement to specific, solvable technical requirement, how you validated your framing with stakeholders, and what you built.
Tell me about a large-scale data integration challenge you solved — bringing together data from disparate sources.
Palantir Foundry's core value proposition is integrating data from dozens of incompatible sources into a unified operational picture. Describe the sources (what systems, what formats, what quality issues), the integration challenges (schema conflicts, missing keys, inconsistent semantics, latency requirements), what you built, and what became possible that wasn't before.
How do you think about the ethical implications of building software that is used in national security or law enforcement?
Palantir's work spans defense, intelligence, law enforcement, and public health — ethically charged domains. Show you've thought seriously about this: what oversight mechanisms you believe are important, how you'd raise an ethical concern if you had one about a use case, what Palantir's role should be vs. the responsibility of their clients, and what your personal ethical line is.
Tell me about a time you built software that directly changed how an organization made important decisions.
Palantir's purpose is decision augmentation — helping analysts, operators, and executives make better decisions faster. Describe the decision the organization was trying to make, what information they were working with before your software, what you built, and how it changed their decision quality or speed. Quantify the decision impact.
Describe a time you worked directly with non-technical end users to understand their needs and translate them into a technical solution.
Palantir FDEs are embedded with clients — sitting next to analysts, operators, and executives. Describe your user discovery process: how you observed the work (shadowing, workflow mapping), what gaps you identified that users hadn't articulated, how you translated observations into requirements, what you built, and whether users actually adopted it.
Tell me about a time you built a system that had to be trusted with sensitive, high-stakes data.
Palantir handles classified intelligence, health records, financial data, and law enforcement information. Walk through the data sensitivity requirements, how you designed the access control model (who could see what, under what conditions), the audit logging approach, how you tested and validated the security model, and what governance processes you put in place.
How would you approach building a common operating picture for a complex organization that has data in 15 different systems?
This is Palantir Foundry's core use case. Walk through your approach: 1) Data inventory and quality assessment for all 15 sources, 2) Ontology design (what are the core entities — people, assets, events — and how do they relate?), 3) Integration pipeline prioritization (which sources are most critical to the primary decision use case?), 4) User interface design for operators, 5) Feedback loop for improving data quality. Drive to what value you'd show in 90 days.
Tips from People Who Got the Offer
Palantir's Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) role is unique — you must show both strong coding skills and the ability to work directly with clients.
Palantir controversially works with government and defense clients — know your stance on their mission before applying.
Technical interviews emphasize practical software engineering over algorithmic puzzles: real-world system design, debugging, and data pipelines.
Show you can translate complex technical systems into clear explanations for non-technical stakeholders.
