What Amazon Tests
Common Amazon Interview Questions
Tell me about a time you had to make an important decision without all the data you needed.
This tests Bias for Action. Describe the stakes, what data was missing and why, how you assessed the best available signal, what you decided, and what happened. Show you can move decisively under uncertainty while managing downside risk.
Describe a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
This maps to Customer Obsession — Amazon's most important LP. Tell a story where you identified an unmet customer need others overlooked, took initiative beyond your scope, and delivered a measurably better customer outcome. Show the customer's problem was your problem.
Tell me about a time you took ownership of something that wasn't technically your responsibility.
This is the Ownership LP in action. Describe a gap you spotted — a failing system, dropped ball, or unowned problem — explain why you stepped in despite it being 'out of scope,' what you did, and the outcome. Show you think like an owner, not a job description.
Give an example of when you disagreed with your manager or team and what you did.
This tests Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit. Show you raised your disagreement clearly and with evidence, advocated respectfully but persistently, and then committed fully once the decision was made — even if it went against you. Amazon respects candor and despises passive agreement.
Tell me about the most complex technical problem you've solved.
Maps to Dive Deep. Walk through a genuinely hard technical problem — the complexity, the root cause investigation, the solution, and the result. Amazon interviewers will probe every detail: be ready to defend every technical decision you made.
Describe a time you found a way to accomplish more with fewer resources.
This is the Frugality LP. Describe a constraint (budget cut, headcount freeze, tight timeline) and how you creatively delivered more than expected within it. Amazon values doing more with less as a core operating principle, not just a crisis response.
Tell me about a time you had to earn the trust of a skeptical stakeholder.
Tests Earn Trust. Describe a stakeholder who doubted you or your team, what the root cause of their skepticism was, the specific actions you took to demonstrate credibility and follow-through, and how the relationship evolved.
Give an example of a time you raised the hiring bar or developed someone on your team.
This covers Hire and Develop the Best. Describe how you identified talent potential in someone, how you coached or challenged them, and the specific growth they achieved. If you've served as a Bar Raiser, describe the process and what you look for.
Tips from People Who Got the Offer
Prepare at least 2 STAR stories per Leadership Principle before your interview.
The Bar Raiser is a senior employee whose sole job is to raise Amazon's hiring bar — they will push hard on every answer.
Amazon values frugality and long-term thinking; show how you've delivered results with limited resources.
For system design, emphasize scalability, reliability, and cost trade-offs — core Amazon engineering values.
